BIO
Malin G Thunell is a Swedish singer and composer with a special love for folk and traditional music. With great honesty and curiosity she manages the Swedish traditional singing style as well as exploring other traditions, which she loves to integrate into her own personal performances. Always with the aim to develop and explore the possibilities of the voice and body as an instrument.
A skilled singer mostly active through the traditional music scene,
Malin grew up in a small town on the east coast of Sweden in the province of Gästrikland. Singing for as long as she can remember, she discovered folk singing for the first time at the age of 16 and it was instant love.
After several years of traveling and studying abroad, an urge developed to pursue work with music. Malin moved to Piteå in the north of Sweden in 2009 and spent two years at Framnäs Folkhögskola in their folk and world music program.
She thereafter attended the Royal College of Music in Stockholm between the years 2011-2014.
Malin has received scholarships from among others the Royal Academy of Music,
the Sigrid Göransson foundation, The Royal College of Music, and Helge Ax:ons memorial fund. In 2016 she received the Lisa Boudré medal from her home county for her pursuit to maintain the local singing tradition after Budres Lisa.
Her work ranges from solo and a capella performances to singing in different constellations and projects. She has toured the world from small churches in the Scottish highlands, through concert halls in Russia, and onto festival stages throughout
Europe and Canada.
She writes and composes her own contemporary music, which bears strong connections to her long relationship with the folk music genre, and released an EP in 2016. She is working on new songs for a full-length album.
Malin also teaches singing and continually gives lessons and workshops in both folksinging and contemporary genres, vocal ensemble,
choir and the traditional herding calls kulning.
